What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The thought of having to defend yourself against a bigger, stronger assailant might be scary, but Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is designed to help you overcome your fears. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) was first developed in 1925 by the Gracie family and is derived from Kodokan Judo. It is a grappling-based martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and submission grappling. It emphasizes techniques that allow a smaller, weaker person to defend themselves against a larger opponent by using leverage, joint locks, and chokeholds. Unlike many other sports and physical activities, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is unique in that it can be done by anyone. So regardless of age, size, gender, or physical limitation, any person can utilize the techniques and principals of Jiu-Jitsu and reap the benefits of its practice.
